To secure biodiversity, we put up bee hotels and plant as many native trees and shrubs as possible to attract insects and birds. We try to preserve existing trees whenever possible. For example, two century-old sycamores are currently receiving special treatment so that they will pass the necessary pruning procedure unscathed.
At Nieuw Zuid, two Pritzker Prize winners, among others, created a design - a first for Belgium - alongside a whole row of other award-winning international and Belgian architects. Today, architecture walks are organised especially for enthusiasts.
Wadis, green roof drainage and yard water reclamation should relieve sewers and gradually channel excess rainwater back into the soil. Evaporation, in turn, provides cooling on hot days.
